When opportunity knocks, grab your metal detector!
A while back a lady friend of mine called to ask if I wanted to hunt a nearby Vicksburg creek. I told her I was too busy to go, but I wished her luck. Little did I realize what an opportunity I missed. Within an hour she came by my place with her various Civil War finds, the best of which was a Texas Artillery button. Obviously, I was heartbroken that I hadn’t taken her up on her invitation. The lesson came home once again – When opportunity knocks, grab it. If you don’t get out with your metal detector or your shovel and seine, you’ll miss some great finds. The button is Albert’s TX15 (Albert’s Record of American Uniform and Historical Buttons book is described on this link), and it’s very rare.
