The joy of digging for bottles
Years ago I began buying run-down rental properties in Vicksburg. My son and I would make the necessary repairs, repainting and bringing up to code, etc., etc., and we would then rent them to what we hoped would be responsible occupants who would take care of the properties and pay the rent on time. We had successes. We had failures. But one side benefit of the process was the unfettered access to the grounds (and the attics and the basements) for the purpose of scanning for coins or relics, or for digging the cisterns and privies for bottles. Owning the property on which you’re hunting is the BEST way to hunt. No stress. No begging. Just dig, whenever or wherever you want. I’m attaching a photo of myself deep within the bowels of a cistern behind one of those houses. As I recall, I dug several good bottles from the cistern, along with… a cannon ball! If you’re interested in digging bottles, you may want to subcribe to Antique Bottle & Glass Collector Magazine, or visit some of the online bottle diggers’ sites, Antique Bottles Forum or Antique BottleCollector’s Haven.
