Extinct towns offer some fine metal detecting
A while back I was hunting a creek that runs through the old extinct town of Warrenton, Mississippi. So much garbage has been dumped upstream by modern dwellers and driven downstream by the currents, however, that I couldn’t hunt for all the “trash” signals. So I settled for an area near the stream that I hadn’t hunted much before. I was soon reminded that the early settlers were a bit “trashy” themselves, for I dug several holes more than two feet deep, only to find plows and junk cast iron. But where there are trash dumps, there are house sites. A search of the area adjacent to the dump turned up some better finds - two 1840 coins, one a half dime, the other a dime, both New Orleans mint. The photos hardly do them justice - both coins are beautifully preserved. If you haven’t tried hunting an extinct town, by all means visit your local library, ask the old timers, or seek help at the county courthouse to locate those in your area. Old town sites provide some of the best treasure hunting you’ll ever experience.
