Keep that metal detector humming II
A friend of mine recently bought 15 acres just behind Confederate lines in north Vicksburg, and was nice enough to invite me along to hunt with him. As of yesterday we have made three sojourns into this exceedingly hilly and vine-ridden jungle with only a few minie balls to show for our efforts. I knew the area had been hunted in the past, but surely, I thought, we would find a few nice relics. And I think we will. 15 acres is a lot of ground to cover; we’ve probably barely covered an acre. This is not the first time I’ve encountered a stingy site, and in all prior ones it was only a matter of time until they yielded treasure of some sort. We’ll go back, probably many more times, and I’ll almost guarantee the effort will be worth it.
I BOUGHT SOME LAND THAT WAS ONCE PART OF A OLD PLANTATION. ANY TIPS ON FINDING ARTIFACTS?
↓ Quote | PostedMarch 21, 2007, 6:09 amHi. You are very lucky! Old plantations can be the source of some of the best relic and coin finds anywhere, anytime. You didn’t mention where your land is, but since it’s an “old plantation,” I’ll assume it’s in the South. You may therefore locate Civil War relics as well as artifacts and coins that originated from the family (ies) who lived there. If I were you I’d look for the site of the main mansion as well as the outlying buildings, and, possibly, the slave quarters. Once you’ve hunted these areas with a metal detector, you may want to probe for the privies and try digging for some really old bottles. As I said, you’re quite lucky to have access to such valuable real estate. And if you need some help with the digging, just give me a call! Regards, Malcolm
