I was amazed to see you were still picking up Iron at such high discrim levels...& then the light dawned...

I suspect you had been playing with the"Notch" feature?...in fact it would be the ONLY way this machine would still pick up iron if the discrim is set at anything over, say, about 5 in any discrim mode.

The fact that you increased yours to 99 the max shows you had in fact notched IN iron NOT out.

Sadly the manual is not very well written when it comes to this point & many many people myself included get caught out by the F-75's quirky notch system.

In effect, when you select anything using Notch...it REVERSES what ever is set in Discrim! HONESTLY.

So if you have Discrim'd OUT iron....then go to Notch & notch "out" iron there also...you have actually just notched it IN....therefore you will indeed be able to go all the way up to 99 & still detect iron...as you found. You have opened it up to iron in notch.

The easiest way to check is to test it over some iron, a nice old rusty nail will be perfect, if your discrim is working as it should it shouldn't detect it even at really low levels, 2-5...if it does & as you found out it still does at 99, then it should be quite clear that in effect you have notched iron IN.

To restore do a factory re-set, you know for sure any Notch settings are removed...then try it again, I guarantee you will not detect iron, even at low levels in any discrim mode.

So many people, especially over there in the US where you love to notch out foil & tabs have been caught out with this "quirk", remember notch does the opposite of your discrim settings.

I operate here in the UK with sites full of ancient iron contamination, & for the first few days this machine drove me crazy...then I figured out, what I was doing wrong.

As to depth, well if set correctly again, this machine is as deep as any i have ever used...certainly alongside my Minelabs...but with a much faster recovery speed, it will detect, say, a medieval hammered silver cut quarter right next to an old rusty nail at 6 inch or more & a full coin down to 12-14" is not unusual.

Personally i never use Notch, over here I never do parks etc so have no need for it, but if you do, then remember what i say, it will REVERSE whatever is set in Discrim...if you Discrim out iron, you have just notched it back IN again, same with foil etc of course.

I hope that helps you chaps.

True, you will find buttons, musket balls, etc., with the F75 - those that are near the surface. The F75 that I own definitely does not have the depth capability (in discriminating mode) of many other good detectors, including my Shadow X5, which is my overall favorite.

im a bit ammused how you found nothing with the f75 ive always found objects like buttons, musket balls, coins etc sometimes so small you can hardly see what its found like the percusion cap from a shotgun shell objects dont come much smaller than this, to be honest dont use this detector in default mode, its much better in je mode with sensitivity set to 60+ and rejection set to 14-16, number of tones 1 and frequency f1 better for small objects, at the end of the day with the tone set to one it will pick up everything of a ferrous material with the same sound which you would want to dig, you will get background chatter if so turn the sensitivity down a bit, but it doesnt bother me because at least i know the machine is on

Good dont use the F75 let me have all the stuff you miss, if you had really used one then you would know if you sweep it fast it doesn't even respond, it's the slowest detector I have ever used. So unless you got a bad one you don't know what you are talking about.

ROS, you and I have to agree: the F-75 is a disappointing machine. Since my report made above, I have tried the F-75 on several relic hunting trips. It will not approach the capabilities of many other macines in that venue. I still want to try it coin hunting, and in a search for deep artillery shells. I will report on that when I have done so. Your experiences posted here would be of interest as well. Thanks, Malcolm
